What is Section 508?
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (required in the United Sates) was amended in 1998 by the U.S. Congress to require that all Federal agencies make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Section 508 was enforced in order to remove barriers in information technology, allowing new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage the development of technologies that will help achieve this goal. The law applies to all Federal agencies who develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 guidelines, "agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others." Section 508 compliance has not only been a requirement in government agencies, but it’s also important when providing software solutions and designing Web pages.
